The days are getting longer and you can feel spring and summer in the air. While warm and sunny weather is something to look forward to, it can become uncomfortably hot if the last few years are anything to go by. You can think of our air conditioning as laying the foundation for a more comfortable home on warm days. When selecting a cooler temperature for summer, don’t make the mistake of setting too low a temperature e.g.19 to 21 degrees Celsius. The room won’t cool any faster by opting for the lowest temperatures right from the start. The most efficient method is to start cooling your home at around the 22 to 23 degrees mark and then adjusting downwards from there. Remember too, that people wear lighter clothing in summer so any temperature that hovers around the 19-degree mark might be uncomfortably cold for them, and it will be a waste of power to go that low in the first place.
But there are other things you can do to allow your air conditioning system to work at its very best. For example, you can keep your curtains and blinds closed during the warmest part of the day. Or, you can open up the house for a short time before you turn on the air conditioner; open windows and doors at opposite ends of your house as this will generate a cross-breeze through the home. This ventilation will release any accumulated heat from your home and once you’ve closed your windows and doors after the heat has been removed, your air conditioning will have less work to do. This will make it perform more efficiently and save you more money as a result.
