The link between increased temperatures and decreased productivity has been so well researched that you can say its undeniable. Hot weather does have an effect on productivity, and this NASA study gives us some excellent evidence of this.
NASA monitored the performance of telegraph key operators and found that in temperatures of 26.6 degrees Celsius, the operators made five errors in an hour, and 19 mistakes after three hours working in the same temperature. At 32 degrees Celsius, the operators made nine mistakes per hour and 27 after three hours. At 35 degrees Celsius, the error rate skyrocketed – excuse the pun. Mistakes went way up to 60 in one hour and 138 in three hours.
These figures are consistent with other studies done around the world. They all point to a lack of performance in the workplace when employees are forced to work in warm and uncomfortable conditions. It’s not just in the office or factory where heat stifles performance and output. In the home, we have all felt listless when it’s stuffy inside.
